In the second mass shooting in less than 14 hours, at least nine people are dead and more than a dozen wounded after someone opened fire in downtown Dayton, Ohio, early Sunday, according to police.

In addition, the suspected shooter was shot and killed by responding officers. Police said they are only aware of one shooter.

Authorities responded quickly to the shooting, first reported at 1 a.m., and said police are regularly present in the crowded district popular with tourists and locals.

Miami Valley Hospital spokesperson Terrea Little told ABC News that they have received 16 victims from the shooting in the Oregon District. She did not provide further information on their injuries.

Three victims have been admitted to the hospital, eight were treated and released and five others remain under observation, Little said.

"Most of us can’t get to our cars because there are bodies scattered all over across the street from our cars," an eyewitness told Dayton ABC affiliate WKEF. "People that were shot, hit, innocent people -- we can’t get home to our families now, and those people aren’t going home to their families either.”

The shooting took place in Dayton's Oregon District, a collection of bars, restaurants and local businesses in the city's downtown. The entire shooting took place outside, police said.

The suspect was using a "long gun," according to police.

"I’m heartbroken," Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley tweeted Sunday morning. "Thank you to our first responders for all that you’ve done. We will share updates as we have more information."

In addition to local police, the FBI is on scene assisting with the investigation.

The Dayton Police Department said in a tweet just after 3 a.m. they were "actively investigating an active shooter incident in the #OregonDistrict. Please avoid the area."

"This is a large scene and investigation. Thank you for your patience," Dayton police added in a subsequent tweet.

Two bars in the Oregon District -- Hole in the Wall and Ned Peppers -- wrote on Instagram that their staff was safe.

Kettering Health Network, which operates eight hospitals in the Dayton and Cincinnati areas, said it was treating patients, but offered no specifics.

The shooting comes just 14 hours after a gunman killed 20 people and injured more than two dozen more at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. The shooting was the eighth-deadliest in modern U.S. history. Five of the top-10 deadliest shooting in U.S. history have come since 2016.

The pope, delivering his Sunday mass, referenced the three shootings in Gilroy, El Paso and Dayton, asking worshipers "to join my prayer for the people who lost their lives, the injured and their family members."

"I am spiritually close to the victims of the episodes of violence that have bloodied Texas, California and Ohio, in the United States, striking defenseless people," Pope Francis said.

Dayton mass shooting suspect identified as 24-year-old Connor Betts

(Pic of suspect in link)

The body armor-clad gunman who fatally shot nine people in a popular Dayton, Ohio nightlife district early Sunday has been identified in a report as Connor Betts.

Betts, 24, who was shot dead by cops moments into his rampage, was identified as the shooter by CBS News, citing law-enforcement sources.

Investigators were tossing Betts’ home in Bellbrook, Ohio — about 15 miles southeast of Dayton — on Sunday, sources told the network.

Nine people were killed and another 26 people injured when the shooter opened fire with a .223 high-capacity rifle around 1 a.m. Sunday, authorities said in a press conference shortly after the shooting.

Cops stationed nearby in the city’s hopping Oregon District, home to rows of popular restaurants, bars and theaters, raced into action, downing the gunman less than a minute after the onslaught began.

Officials did not immediately identify a motive behind the attack, which came just about 13 hours after a rifle-toting gunman in El Paso, Texas shot his way through a packed Walmart, killing 20 people and injuring 26.

Dozens of bullets ring out in frightening video of Dayton bloodbath

(Video in link)

Dozens of bullets can be heard in just 30 seconds in a shocking video of the carnage in Dayton, Ohio, that left 10 dead early Sunday.

Stunned onlooker Izack Johnson started filming from his car as he heard gunshots in the city’s entertainment district at around 1:30 a.m.

In the first 30-seconds of his clip, more than 40 gunshots can be heard ringing out — some presumably being the hero cops who eventually “neutralized” the so-far unidentified madman after he killed 9 innocent people.

People are seen racing away from the carnage as Johnson swears in shock at what he is witnessing.

“Oh f—k. Dude what the f—k!” he says in the video, with the gunshots ending 15-seconds before his video finishes, presumably after the gunman was himself killed.

“At a loss for words and full of emotions, this isn’t a city I grew up in,” Johnson wrote on Twitter.

“Prayers for everyone hurt, and bless everyone who was able to walk away. I’m thankful for you.”

Mayor Nan Whaley said that the unnamed gunman was wearing body armour and used an “AK-like gun assault rifle” with “high capacity magazines” when he opened fire in the popular nightlife district.

“In less than one minute, Dayton first responders neutralized the shooter,” Whaley said, saying they saved “hundreds” of lives by killing the gunman so quickly.

As well as the nine fatalities, hospitals treated 27 people who were wounded in the shooting, the mayor said at a press conference.

and I'm sure there's many we don't hear about....this is insane....

It doesn't even make national news if less than 5 are killed !

I hate the idea of giving up rights, but something needs to be done about the availability of assault rifles.

It's crazy when 20 people get gunned down just going to Walmart !

This stuff doesn't happen in Western European countries, Canada, Australia, etc.

I can see it happening in Mexico with the cartels protecting their interests, but here it is for no reason whatsoever

I agree, but it's close to impossible to have complete gun control here. Like anything somehow someway these psychos will get guns illegally

I think it would be much harder for an average Canadian citizen to get an AR-15, or similar.

There are so many of these around that even if you banned future sales, the supply is still there, even banning ammo sales wouldn't work well, ammo can be made without needing a full on factory, a good machinist could do it.

I don't get what it takes to make somebody snap and go kill a dozen random people knowing you'll either be killed by the police or at your own hands, certainly not as frequently as this happens, it really is barely even news anymore.

Just about any nut can blow away a dozen people, a psycho with money like that guy in Vegas can do a lot more damage. Two lunatics with a helicopter could kill thousands, it's a scary world !

This can happen virtually anywhere, the deranged shooter usually plans on dieing after his killing rampage

No place is safe not a store, church, temple, beach, park, ball game, school, hospital, nursing home,or whatever !
